Ingredient spotlights

Oil ingredients, explained.

Conditioning oils, emollients and antioxidants play different roles in cosmetics. Explore these familiar examples without assuming that an oil’s name tells you its application method.

From our ingredient library: general skincare education, separate from this product’s ingredient list.

1Conditioning oils

Sunflower seed oil

An oil obtained from sunflower seeds and used in cosmetic products for skin conditioning. Different oil-based products have different purposes, so an ingredient name cannot tell you whether a formula rinses off or stays on.

2Conditioning

Squalane

An emollient used to soften and smooth the feel of skin. This clear oil-like ingredient appears in many cosmetic textures; its presence alone does not determine a finished product’s richness or finish.

3Antioxidants

Vitamin E

Tocopherol is a form of vitamin E used in cosmetics as an antioxidant and skin-conditioning ingredient. Antioxidants can help limit oxidation within a formula; that does not establish a finished product’s performance on skin.

Product guidance

A method
of its own.

Purifying Oil’s use type has not been set. Its product label will determine whether it is removed or left on; the steps below keep that distinction intact.

  1. 01

    Begin with its own label

Check what the oil is intended for and where it may be applied. An oil format alone does not establish cleansing or leave-on use.

  2. 02

    Follow the designated method

Use clean hands and follow the method stated for this product. Keep its application separate from the guidance for Melt Elixir Oil.

  3. 03

    Complete as directed

Follow the product’s instruction on removal or leaving it on, then close the container. The finishing step belongs to the oil’s specific use type.
